Spelling Help

This is Asher's first year of spelling tests. We do a lot of different activities to help him learn his spelling list. At times I write his spelling words on index cards (each word broken up by syllables-one card says "up" the other says "set" for upset). Then I hide them in the backyard and have him go on a treasure hunt. I also quiz him orally and have him write out each word. In the future I am going to take him outside and let him use sidewalk chalk to spell his words all over the drive way.

Today was a rainy day and I wanted to do something a little different to keep Asher interested in the task at hand. So I pulled out Alphabet Avalanche and let him spell all his words at the kitchen table. Finding all the letters he needs for each word is an excellent way to learn spelling. Elliana had fun finding all the letters and trying to spell words. To my astonishment she spelled mom (she thought it said mommy, but that is pretty close!). She was pretty happy with herself.
