ROAD TRIP!!

Our family set out on a road trip this morning. We headed north to visit my family and to celebrate the coming of a "new York" to the world :)

On the way we stopped at Happy Joe's for lunch (the best pizza in the world). We also spent some time at Niabi Zoo. We had a great day :)

Here are some pictures from our trip. I didn't get any pictures of my prego sis (I was having to much fun chatting). But let me tell you she is beautiful! She definitely does pregnancy VERY well :)

Who? What? When? and Where?

Can you identify this picture???? It is a picture of a picture and it is very blurry..so do you know??? Yeah Leah!! She guessed it; this picture was taken at Pikes Peak in Colorado during the summer of 1996. Wow that seems like a lifetime ago. Aaron and I had been dating four years and were just starting to talk about marriage. I had no idea that a year later I would be Mrs. Nelson. Twelve years later I can honestly say it just keeps getting better. Thank you Aaron for being the love of my life, my best friend, my hero, my night in shining armor, the cute guy that comes home to me every night, the person I most want to spend my time with, the person who challenges and stretches me, the man who loves me on days that I am soaring and even more on those days I just want to crawl into a hole, the leader of my home, the father of my children and the keeper of my heart.

Ramble from the Nelson household....

Summer is so busy for our family. The boys have baseball two days a week, the library reading program activities, swimming lessons and day camp (for Joshua). We are always on our way somewhere. Although it can be exhausting, it is a lot of fun. Aaron and I enjoy seeing the boys so active. And the boys love keeping busy.

I am in the process of organizing school for the fall. Joshua will be entering 2nd grade and Asher will be kindergartner. I have spent many hours pouring over curriculum and doing research to find the best fit for each of the boys. Last week three big boxes of school materials arrived. Since their arrival I have been busy organizing and preparing to put on the teacher hat.

For my homeschooling buddies that are interested in what we will be using this year, I will break it down by child.

-Joshua- Sonlight Core 2, Saxon math, Sequential Spelling, paragraph editing, language and grammar, math warm ups, Spanish, Wordly wise 3000, A Reason for Handwriting, Piano

-Asher- My Fathers World Kindergarten, Explode the Code (Ready, Set, Go for the code), Spanish

Add a 1 ½ year old to the mix and it is going to be a busy year!!

I recently read a great homeschooling article on Your Sacred Calling, check it out :)

A little triathlon update for ya- Aaron and I agree that I am capable of completing the triathlon next month. However, I just don’t feel the need to compete right now. So I am going to wait until next summer to jump into this new sport. So my next tri-update will be next July!

Here are some cute pictures of the kids… (I know you all need your cute fix for the day!)

Elliana's hair is now long enough for hair ties :) This is a picture of my beauty with her hair all done up :)

Insert scary hissing noise...(use your imagination)

You never know what kind of craziness will occur when the Nelson and Rhodes cousins get together for a play date. Most often they are pretending to be dragons. This involves crawling around on the ground and making all sorts of hissing noises. Despite the looks of terror that sometimes appear on unsuspecting children and mothers it is a lot of fun (these unrelated bystanders soon realize the kids are just playing, and they really are nice and friendly). Here are some cute pictures of the cousins (I mean dragons) at the park this morning.

A Great Day for a Run

Today our family participated in the annual State Farm Fun Run. This was our fourth year running in this event. I ran the 5K and the boys had a blast running in the fun run.

Imagine a large group of people huddled around a starting line preparing to take off on a 3.3 mile run. Everyone is talking, it almost sounds like bees buzzing. Then the gun is fired and everyone takes off running. Some are fast and just zoom ahead, others burn out quickly. Still others are cut off as you will yourself to get ahead of them...

They swarmed around me like bees, but they died out as quickly as burning thorns; in the name of the Lord I cut them off. - Psalms 118:12

OK, I don't really think this verse is referring to the race today. But it was wonderful when I opened my bible to the Psalms this morning and my eyes fell upon this verse. Funny how God works sometimes :)

The last time I ran the 5K was three years ago. I have no idea what my time was then but I do know that I came in last, due to a knee injury (behind a walking grandma!). So I was very pleased to come in at 29:51 this year. I was in the middle of the pack :) And I was able to "cut off" some runners too :)
This is a picture of dad teaching the boys how to stretch their muscles in preparation for the fun run.

Here is Joshua running towards the finish line! (no time for waving there is a race to win!)
Dad ran with Asher...The Nelson boys after the fun run:)
It was a lot of fun and we look forward to next year :)

The thoughts on my mind...

I am so blessed to be the mother of these three kids. I know that I in no way deserve them. Every smile and laugh reminds me of the goodness and love of God. And as much as I love them, I know that God loves them abundantly more than I can even fathom. That is mind boggling to me. I am thankful for these blessings and I am even more grateful that the Lord loves them and cares for them better than I ever could.

Oh, I have an amazing recipe to pass along (from Allrecipes).

Stuffed Peppers :)
INGREDIENTS
1 cup water
1/2 cup uncooked white rice
2 bell peppers, halved and seeded
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 green onions, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1 pinch ground black pepper
1 tomato, diced
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

DIRECTIONS
-Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
-In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil. Stir in the rice. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat, and set aside.
-Place the peppers cut-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Roast 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until tender and skin starts to brown.
-While the peppers are roasting, heat oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the onions, basil, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper in oil for 2 to 3 minutes.
-Stir in the tomato, and cook for 5 minutes.
-Spoon in the cooked rice, and stir until heated through. Remove from heat, mix in the feta cheese, and spoon the mixture into the pepper halves.
-Return to the oven for 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

Also, Susie Larson has a GREAT post today :)

Am I all over the place today or what!!

When the Lord sneaks up on you...

Sometimes the weirdest things happen. Sometimes God appears at times you are not expecting Him. I cherish these times when my moments with God come as a surprise. I was in one of my gym classes when the instructor told the class to look up the words to the song Everyday by Rascal Flatts. She informed us that she did not think they were singing about a girl, but about something more. I knew immediately what she was insinuating, as did the rest of the class. Enjoy!

Every Day-Rascal Flatts

You could have bowed out gracefully
But you didn't
You knew enough to know to leave well enough alone
But you wouldn't
I drive myself crazy trying to stay out of my own way
The messes that i made
But my secrets are so safe
The only one who gets me
Yeah, you get me
It's amazing to me

How every day
every day
every day
You save my life

I come around all broken down and crowded out
And you are a comfort
Sometimes the place I go is so deep and dark and desperate
I don't know
I don't know

How every day
every day
every day
You save my life
Sometimes I swear I don't know if I am coming or going
But you always say something without even knowing
That I am hanging onto your words with all my might
And it's alright
Yeah I am alright
For one more night
Every day

Every day
Every day
Every day
Every day
Every day
Every day
Every day
You save me
You save me
Na na na na na na-ah
Every day
Every day
Every day

Every day
You save my life

Thanks Cathy!!!

On Monday I was blessed to be able to spend a couple of hours talking with a good friend of mine. She is one of those people that you spend hours with but when you leave it feels like it has only been five minutes. She homeschools and always has great ideas. In fact I picked up a great idea from her and I am so excited to get started. I have family and friends that would just love the idea so I am going to explain and post pictures below.

OK. Here is the chart that you need to get started… (I picked it up at the local school shop).
Each child gets 5 cards with their name on them (that number can be whatever you want it to be). They have to choose five different areas to complete sometime throughout the day. However I can stick a little card with their name on it in two activities that I decide they must do that day. So I might decide that Joshua has to do Math and Reading. He will have to do those to categories but he gets to choose three other activities that interest him that day. Pretty cool!!!

These are my descriptions for each category (they can be altered to whatever works for your family).
Art- draw a picture, coloring, building something out of craft materials
Computer- Starfall, educational computer game
Math- extra page in math book, for Asher working on counting and calendar work
Free choice- household chore (they get to choose from a list)
Writing- a story, poem, song, for Asher the alphabet or small words
Spelling- write spelling words two times each, for Asher talk through spelling some small words
Listen- classical music or whatever CD I choose (the CD I have chosen is in the pocket behind the word Listen).
Phonics- Explode the Code, for Asher sounding out small words (see the red chart at end of this post)
Reading- the library reading program (during the school year it will be whatever books we are currently working on)
There are two blanks that you can fill in and make whatever categories fit your needs. I added Awana and Legos.

This is so cool!!! It puts the kids in charge of getting things accomplished. During the school year this will be great when one child has downtime while I work with the other. For example, if I am working with Asher I can send Joshua to the chart to make a choice and follow through with his activity. WooHoo!!! You can make the completion of each day worth a point and then have them working toward a prize.

I also picked up another chart to use during the school year. You can tell I was a school teacher before having kids, I just love teaching supplies!
