I ran 22 miles this morning. I would like to say that this run was easy. But that would be a lie. When your goal distance is beyond 20 miles, your base mileage is 15. (I need to run 15 miles before I can see an end in sight.) These base miles were actually not too bad. I even had the silly idea that I might run farther than 22 miles. But then miles 15-17 took about 2 hours (Well, not really. But it sure felt like it.). As I was pushing myself through these miserable two miles I decided I had better stick to my original plan and just get to 22 miles. For seven miles my legs cramped. It was just not fun. But I had a goal and....
..and....
Using the treadmill is very helpful for long runs. I stop every five miles from 0-15 and then every two miles from 15-22 so I can stretch and eat. When I finally finished running I stopped the treadmill and stretched. While stretching I immediately understood why people cry when they finish a marathon. I actually had tears in my eyes. It was a HARD run and I did NOT give up.
