Joshua has really been enjoying math this year. He has always done well in this subject but in years past he never really had fun during his math lessons. It was more of an "if I have to" sort of attitude. So this year has been delightfully pleasant in the whole math arena. One reason for this change of heart is that I found a math program that works for him. He is pretty easily distracted and as a result did not do well when the math pages were full of color and pictures. He would spend a lot of time coloring the pictures and making up stories to go along with the pictures. He would eventually get his math problems done but not before mom was about to go crazy. I am so thankful that we switched from Horizons to Saxon (Horizons is a good curriculum, just does not work for my boy).

On Wednesday we started our math lesson and boy did Joshua get all excited :) He discovered that he was going to make brownies! There was a from scratch recipe for brownies in the teachers manual!

You might be asking yourself what in the world brownies have to do with math. Well let me enlighten you :) We have been reviewing fractions in the last week or so. While making the brownies he would have to determine when to use 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup, 1/2 tsp, etc. So it was a great way for him to really study his fractions :) I asked him some probing questions while he worked away on his yummy creation (how many 1/3 will fit into 1 cup?). Here are some pictures of my little chef enjoying his math lesson :)
