For younger children- Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare for Children by E. Nesbit
About 10 years of age- Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb
Older children- Shakespeare Stories by Leon Garfield
The general idea with starting Shakespeare at a young age is familiarity. If they see Shakespeare as something they can understand and enjoy they won't be intimidated when they dive into the details in high school and college.
This week we started reading The Tempest from Tales from Shakespeare. The boys are enjoying it! In addition to exposing them to the great works of Shakespeare, I am continuing to try and acquaint Joshua with some other great books. Last week he finished Call it Courage, The Courage of Sarah Noble, and Bears on Hemlock Mountain. This week he is finishing Old Yeller and starting Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the Matchlock Gun.
In the future he will be reading:
At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald
Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll
Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink
Men of Iron by Howard Pyle
I am reading The Witch of Blackberry Pond, The Family Under the Bridge and The Little House on the Prairie to the boys. The really enjoy our read aloud time.
Below is a picture of Elliana our little princess (she says daddy is her prince!). I love to watch her dance..
